A community-spirited Bolton council worker has swapped spreadsheets for bed sheets - using pillowcases to create essential kit for frontline staff, each with a special message.

When she’s not busy keeping her department’s finances in order, Susan Kearsley has been sewing scrub bags for the NHS, care home staff and GP surgeries.

Susan has already crafted 45 of the drawstring bags and has her sights set on making 100.

Scrub bags play a vital role in keeping health and care staff safe, helping them to transport their used work clothes home to be cleaned.

Each bag has a heartfelt message sewn into it, thanking NHS workers and other frontline staff for their continued hard work and commitment.

Susan said: “I saw a post on Facebook about some nurses at Bolton Hospital who needed scrub bags and I decided to make some out of some new pillowcases.

“I personalise them with a machine stitched message to say thank you to the NHS staff.

“It soon caught on and friends started to donate materials and cash to help me to make even more.

“I’ve also made some for staff at a GP surgery and for some care homes. I just wanted to show my thanks to the NHS and do my bit to support those on the front line.”

Bolton Council’s executive cabinet member for wellbeing, Cllr Sue Baines, said: “This is a wonderful gesture from Susan and yet another example of how everyone in Bolton is pulling together at this difficult time.”
