Shoppers have heaped praise on traders and staff at Bolton Market who are helping get vital supplies to those who need them most during the coronavirus lockdown.

Thousands of vulnerable and self-isolating residents have received deliveries from market traders, allowing them to enjoy fresh and healthy local produce sent straight to their door.

A total of 13,200 deliveries have been made so far with a further 3,000 opting to use the order and collect service.

At a time when larger supermarket chains have struggled to meet demand for delivery slots, Bolton Market introduced the home delivery service to help local residents.

Customers have spoken of their admiration for the efforts of traders. One said: “It’s been great knowing we are getting top quality goods to our door.”

“Well done to everyone, while putting yourselves at risk helping others,” added another, while a third simply described traders and staff as “absolute live savers”.

As well as deliveries, food stalls have remained open throughout lockdown, allowing customers to buy essentials while also supporting small independent Bolton businesses.

The market has introduced a queueing system and regular announcements remind everyone to observe social distancing rules.

Adele Warren, Bolton Council’s executive Ccabinet member for environmental service, said: “I know from visiting the market myself what an incredible job everyone is doing at a time when it has never been more important for people to access fresh food.

“Those who are vulnerable or self-isolating have the confidence of knowing they can get vital supplies brought straight to their door from a trusted local business.

“Many new shoppers have used the market for the first-time during lockdown and I hope they will continued to do so in the months and years to come.”

Bolton Market is open to members of the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Key workers can gain priority access between 8am to 10am.
