A FORMER Horwich high street bank is starting a new life as an opticians after undergoing major renovation work.

Justin Kellett Opticians has moved further down Winter Hey Lane to the old of Barclays Bank building and the new premises will open on Monday.

The independent opticians, which opened in 2016, is making the move as it continues its growth journey. It has invested £100,000-plus in the project.

The old bank building had stood empty and derelict after shutting its doors in 2018. Announcing the branch closure, Barclays said customer numbers had fallen as people were turning to different methods of banking.

Director Justin Kellett is looking forward to the practice’s new home. He said: “We’ve made the move because we’ve outgrown our old premises.

“Making the move during the pandemic has had its challenges but we’re delighted with the way the building has been transformed.

“It’s been really nice to see it being brought back to life and the way it has been repurposed.

“Our new home is about four times the floor space of what we’ve had and has lots of character. We’re also pleased to still be part of the high street.”

The practice now employs six people and the move has been more than 12 months in the making.

Justin said that the business had continued its growth, even during the pandemic. He said: “We’re well established in the town and we give a good personal service.”
