Page 16 January 2026 AD SALES 01204 478812 VITAL work to repair Horwich’s Holy Trinity Church’s iconic tower is well advanced thanks to the amazing fundraising efforts of the community. The cost of the work totals £312,000 and to date local people, the church’s congre- gation and grant providers have raised £220,000. The tower was suffer- ing from disrepair falling masonry and inadequate gut- ters and downspouts causing flooding into the church itself. Last year it was revealed that a total of 30 pieces of masonry had either fallen or been removed from the tower, putting the Grade II church at risk of closure on health and safety grounds. Contractors Lloyd and Smith Restoration have now installed new rainwater pipes and almost completed exten- sive masonry repairs. Bolton West MP Phil Brickell visited the church for a first-hand look at the work being carried out. The MP discussed the state of the church during a Westminster debate on the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme last year. The programme is aimed at helping historic places of worship like Holy Trin- ity save money on restora- tion programmes. During the debate, Mr Brickell said schemes like this were key supporting communities like Hor- wich and to preserving their heritage. Speaking after his site visit, he said: “I’m delighted that Holy Trinity Church was able to benefit from the Listed Places of Wor- ship Scheme. “Thank you to Steven Greenhalgh, Brian Smith and architect Steven for showing me the ongoing works and the chance to enjoy some incredible views of Horwich. Holy Trinity is the landmark in Horwich and it must be protected for future generations.” Reverend Nicola Butter- worth, Vicar of Holy Trinity, said: “Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported our appeal for the resto- ration and preservation of the tower which will ensure that the church remains the focal point for worship and a welcoming place for all in Horwich”.
