As part of this year's Poppy Appeal, the Horwich Branch of The Royal British Legion will be displaying large poppies on lamp posts for the first time this year, following the route of the Annual Remembrance Sunday Parade on November 12th.

Barbara Ronson said: “The inspiration for this appeal came from the fantastic effort shown by the residents and councillors of Bromley Cross and Astley Bridge who joined forces with the Local British Legion last year”.

Keith Whittingham from Horwich British Legion explained:“The sight of these poppies on lamp posts around Horwich will be a powerful symbol of the sacrifices service men and women have made.

"Horwich has a long and proud history of our ‘own’ joining the services.

"By bringing this symbol out onto our streets my hope is that more of our community will come together to reflect on Remembrance Sunday, to also think of our duties and opportunities: duties to educate future generations of our forebears’ sacrifices; and opportunities that arise when our community comes together to remember their heroism”.

He added: "The generosity of our community and local businesses have surpassed all our expectations in their support for this appeal.

"We have now exceeded our original target and raise over £1,500 to place a poppy on every lamp post on the Remembrance Parade route.

"Some local businesses are even sponsoring whole streets. We already have 300 and hope to see another 100+ sponsored so to include the routes into Horwich via Chorley New Road and Chorley Old Road.

"By sponsoring one of these large Poppies for just £5 EACH you will help ‘bring to life’ the streets of Horwich. Once we have covered the Annual Remembrance Day route we hope to extend the display along the main routes into Horwich."
