Market Place Shopping Centre, Bolton is proud to be supporting an exciting project called ‘Destination Bolton’. This is a collaborative project with Bolton Catholic Primary Schools and the Prince’s Teaching Institute.

The project mirrors one on the same theme that is happening at The Migration Museum in London. The aim is to develop young people’s understanding about migration, movement and settlement.

The aim of the project is for a good proportion (over 5,000) of young citizens living in Bolton to know their own unique story, and how and why did Bolton become their home?

Some children will have families who have lived in Bolton for generations, others may be new to the town. Some families may have settled here because of changes in employment, family, love or because they are seeking refuge. Others may be here because their great grandparents and beyond made Bolton their home.

Destination Bolton is inviting young people and their families to tell their migration story in just a few sentences on a paper disc. From Monday 2nd December, the public will be able to view some of the story discs from all the partner Catholic schools involved in the project at a special interactive exhibition at Market Place. Organisers will also be encouraging passers-by to contribute their stories to the display. This will become a focal point in Bolton town centre and give a unique insight into the history of all who have chosen to make Bolton their home.

The launch event will be at 1pm on Monday 2nd December in Market Place and the exhibition can be viewed until Friday 6th December.

Nikki Wilson-Cook, Centre Manager, Market Place says, “We are really excited to be a part of the Destination Bolton project. It’s such an educational initiative for all generations to enjoy and it really shines a light on the cultural diversity of the town. We are very much looking forward to reading all the stories that the children have to tell.”
