They revealed that people were being forced to stand and queue - with at one stage last month four times the amount of people the unit has space for waiting to be seen. In one message on its Twit- ter feed the hospital said: “Right now in our A&E we have four times more people than we have space. Wait times are more than four hours. “We know it’s difficult to access the right healthcare service, but just coming to A&E isn’t right. We are here to help, but please help us.” In a statement Jo Street, director of operations at the hospital trust, added: “If you’ve had an emergency, an accident or something that is life-threatening, please come to us. “If it’s not life-threatening or an emergency, please ring 111 or access 111 online, find a phar- macy or ring your GP. “We are doing everything we can to treat people who need us most and to keep everyone safe and well whilst we are experi- encing this busy period.” Hospital chiefs have also stressed that A&E is not an alternative to a GP appointment. In a statement the trust said: “Choosing the most appropriate place for care allows our ambu- lance and emergency depart- ment staff to concentrate on people whose lives are at risk, and can potentially save you a long wait.”
