LOCAL woman Moira Broadhead (pictured) has set herself some of the toughest challenges of her life. In October next year she will be attempting a charity bike ride in Tanzania to raise cash for Breast Cancer Care, Jos Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. She says: "I will be cycling around 216 miles in just over five days through an amazing part of Africa. The ride will start in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro cycling on and off road past the great Rift Valley to the finish line at the gates of the Ngorongoro National Park. "I will not be doing this on my own as women from all over the country are taking part in the cycle ride as well as my friend and fellow midwife Nicky Moate. "This task will present three major challenges for us: "Challenge One - to get fit enough to tackle this as I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2013. From August 2013 to February 2014 I had surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. "I now need to get myself over that treatment and get fit enough to take on this bike ride, and as a person totally averse to doing exercise this is a big challenge for me! "Challenge Two To raise at least 3,000 for the three worthwhile charities that will benefit from the Women V Cancer Cycle Ride. "These are Breast Cancer Care, Jos Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. "Challenge Three To actually complete the bike ride next October. "So why am I doing this? "Every year 55,000 women and men are diagnosed with breast cancer. "Three women die every day from cervical cancer and twelve from ovarian cancer the biggest gynecological killer of women in the UK. "I benefitted from the help and support these charities give to people who have cancer, from a free make up lesson to comfortable chairs to sit on while you have your chemotherapy. "These things really make a difference when you are faced with this illness. "I now have the chance to give something back and I want to support these three brilliant charities to help raise awareness and fund research into improving women's chances of survival. "Over the next eighteen months Nicky and I will be doing a variety of sponsored events and fund raising activities and I will keep readers posted with our activities over the coming year. "I will be grateful for any help you can give be that time, organising your own fund raising event, or donating money. Any amount large or small can make a huge difference. "Thanks for reading my story and if you would care to find out more about the work of these three charities please visit: www.ovarian.org.uk or www.breastcancercare.org.uk or www.jostrust.org.uk ."
