Well, I’ll go t’foot of our stairs . . . the latest addition to Bolton’s Market Place is bound to get people talking – in Lancashire dialect!

A series of popular Boltonian terms have been put on display at resting places and meeting spots throughout the centre.

The aim is to get visitors discussing their linguistic heritage and perhaps even translating them for the benefit of younger members of the family or friends.

Phrases include:

‘‘Use yer loaf’

‘Good ere innit?’

‘Dost tha want summat teyt?’

Roughly translated, for those struggling to understand, they mean:

‘Think for yourself’

'What a lovely place this is’

‘Would you like something to eat?’

The idea behind the installation is to acknowledge the centre’s roots in Bolton and their appreciation of the Bolton community.

Market Place is inviting visitors to see if they can track down all the phrases and quotes.

Nikki Wilson-Cook, Centre Manager, Market Place Bolton, said: “We are thrilled to recognise Bolton’s rich and varied dialect in our latest installation.

“There are bound to be lots of other phrases that didn’t make our list and we would love to hear from our visitors about the ones they use regularly, or can remember being said when they were growing up at a time when dialect was much more widely spoken in the town.

“The installation is fun but also shows we are proud to be at the heart of Bolton and a valued part of its heritage and future.”
