Platforms at three local rail stations are to be extended.

Hag Fold, Atherton and Daisy Hill stations will all be made longer, with work starting in the coming weeks. The extension of the platforms will allow for longer trains with more seats to be used on the Wigan to Manchester railway line.

Local MP Chris Green has long supported local campaigns for the improvement of local stations and has spoken out welcoming the news.

Mr Green said: “Our rail infrastructure has been under strain for some time causing great disruption to many of my constituents’ day-to-day lives.

“This is why it’s fantastic to see that improvements are now being made to our local rail services, with some of our local stations being extended this year.

“Extending the platforms will allow trains with greater passenger capacity to serve the Manchester to Wigan line and I look forward to seeing the full impact of the improvements when the works are completed in May this year.”

From now until early May, works will be undertaken during overnight shifts on Saturdays between the hours of 22:00 and 07:00. Work will also take place during mid-week nights between 22:00- 07:00 from: Monday 18 February – Thursday 21 February 2019 and Monday 01 April 2019 – Thursday 04 April 2019.
